There has been a recent shift in women coming into clinic for menopause information.
During 2021, several progressive events opened up the menopause conversation, and set out to address confusion and provide a foundation of support for women at this time in their life.
Rock My Menopause, a successful, clinician-backed campaign, set out to lead the way. It provides reliable menopause information and brings women together in a supportive network to share their experiences.
‘The Davina effect’
In May 2021, the Channel 4 documentary, Sex, Myths and the Menopause opened the lid on an area of life that many women were not confident discussing.
Viewers flooded social media with praise for Davina McCall’s eye-opening and empowering documentary about her own experience with the menopause.
The factual programme also explored the misinformation around HRT and the controversial Women’s Health Institute (WHI) HRT study, which had created fear and confusion around the safety of HRT.
The impact of the programme, coined ‘The Davina effect’, saw increasing numbers of women asking for HRT.
Menopause policy drivers
The topic of menopause also rose the political ranks when Parliament passed a progressive bill to cut the cost of repeatable HRT prescriptions.
Alongside this, a new cross-Government Menopause Taskforce was established to examine the role of training, workplace policies and peer groups to ensure women are supported.
This was not all. Another step was taken in the menopause revolution in December 2021 with the publication of the Government’s policy paper, Our Vision for the Women’s Health Strategy for England, which set out intentions ahead of the strategy release in 2022.
Whilst these are significant and welcomed breakthroughs, they are going to add to the pressure faced by primary care to support women to manage their menopause.
Help women to Rock My Menopause
Rock My Menopause is a public-facing campaign aimed at raising awareness and stamping out the taboo around menopause, and instilling confidence in women to recognise their symptoms and seek medical advice if they’re affecting their life. The campaign was developed by the Primary Care Women’s Health Forum (PCWHF), a group of 10,000+ healthcare professionals with a special interest in women’s health.
Rock My Menopause provides clinician-led resources to help make society – whether that’s families, friends, employers or the wider public – become more menopause aware, access information on menopause symptoms and treatments, and even join the #Menovist campaign.
An abundance of menopause and perimenopause resources, from podcasts and webinars to factsheets and guides, are available for your patients to help them understand and manage their menopause symptoms. Popular resources include:
- A Menopause Uncovered Webinar, which tackles patient questions, sorting the facts from the fiction
- A Menopause Appointment Guide to help women identify what they need in order to discuss their symptoms with you in confidence
- A podcast on HRT in a Nutshell with menopause specialist Dr Louise Price
- A Symptom Tracker to support women to identify and track their symptoms
Rock My Menopause also encourages everyone to sign up and become a #Menovist to raise awareness of menopause and perimenopause, have open and honest conversations and bring the topic to the fore in everyday life.
Finally, women can also join our private Facebook group which is a safe space to come together and have honest conversations.
