Identity of hospitals with listeria cases revealed

A list of the NHS trusts that have reported cases of listeria in patients linked to consumptions of pre-packed sandwiches and salads have been named by NHS England, along with a list of other trusts which were supplied with products by the company implicated.

Five patient deaths have been confirmed, and these patients were treated at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Further patients have been diagnosed with listeria at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust and East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.

The supplier linked to the outbreak – the Good Food Chain - supplied affected product lines to 43 NHS trusts, plus one independent provider.

These trusts were:

  • Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
  • Black Country Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

Yesterday, following confirmation that the death toll had risen to five, health and social care secretary Matt Hancock ordered a “root and branch” review of the safety of hospital food.
