An outspoken doctor has been killed in the US due to his stance on abortion.

Dr George Tiller, aged 67, was one of the few doctors in America who performed late-term abortions. He survived a similar assult 16 years earlier, in which he was shot and wounded.

He was shot dead at a church in the city of Wichita, Kansas, while serving as an usher during a morning church service.

Dr Tiller's clinic - called Women's Health Care Services - had often been the site of demonstrations by the anti-abortion lobby.

Dr Tiller's widow, four children and 10 grandchildren issued a statement calling his killing "an unspeakable tragedy".

"This is particularly heart-wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace," they said.

President Barack Obama has expressed outrage at the killing.

"However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence," Mr Obama said.

A 51-year-old suspect is helping police with their inquiries.
