Three doctors have announced they will be standing for the position of chairman of BMA Council: Dr Mark Porter, Dr George Rae and Professor Michael Rees.

Dr Mark Porter has been chairman of the BMA’s consultants committee since 2009 and is a consultant anaesthetist at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

Professor Michael Rees has been co-chairman of the BMA’s medical academic staff committee since 2003. He is professor of vascular studies at the University of Bangor.

Dr George Rae is a member of the BMA council and is a GP in Whitley Bay in the north-east of England. He is also a presenter on Street Doctor, a prime time medical reality BBC TV series.

Current chairman Dr Hamish Meldrum (pictured) will relinquish his chairmanship when his five-year term concludes at the end of this month's Annual Representatives' Meeting in Bournemouth.

The election will take place at a Council meeting held immediately after the ARM ends on Thursday June 28.
