Flu cases double

Friday, 22 February 2013

England's flu rates have almost doubled in the last fortnight, reports The Daily Telegraph (p14). The number of people seeing their GP with flu-like symptoms rose to just over 22 per 100,000 in the week ending Feb 17.

Cases have risen steadily in England in the past two weeks, although the newspaper points out that experts say the numbers remain within levels expected for this time of year.

The increase in England has not been mirrored in Northern Ireland, Wales, or Scotland, according to figures from the Health Protection Agency.

There is also "substantial" flu activity in Europe, particularly in Germany, Luxembourg, Sweden and Belgium, according to the article.
