HOSPITAL WAS WARNED AGAINST FINANCE DEAL

A NHS hospital trust was officially warned not to sign a 500 million pounds Private Finance Initiative (PFI) deal that left it on the brink of bankruptcy, reports The Daily Telegraph (p12).

According to the newspaper, an independent report says that hospital regulator Monitor warned there was "significant doubt" that the deal was affordable before it was approved by the previous Labour government.

Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust is the second such organisation to face financial catastrophe, reports the newspaper, after it emerged that South London Healthcare Trust is to go into administration.

The Independent (p12) also carries the story, as does The Guardian (p11).
