Healthcare worker (HCW) uptake of the flu vaccine significantly increased from 35% to 45% in 2011/12.

These figures released this week by NHS Employers and the Social Partnership Forum follow an external evaluation of last year’s Flu Fighter Campaign. Flu leads and other NHS Staff were interviewed to establish which elements of the campaign had worked best. The results have been fed into this year’s flu fighter campaign with a strong focus on the importance of training vaccinators and the development of new campaign materials.

The evaluation showed that while 35% of campaign users rated last year’s campaign as ‘very effective’ and 56% as ‘quite effective, there was a strong indication that if flu fighter materials had arrived earlier the ‘very effective’ proportion would have been higher.

NHS Employers and the Social Partnership Forum have also announced that they will deliver the 2012/13 NHS staff flu vaccination campaign. Some 98% of flu leads who responded to the survey say they plan to run a campaign in 2012/13.
