GP surgeries face having to postpone scheduled flu jab clinics because of a shortage of vaccine.

Crucell, a pharmaceutical company based in the Netherlands has suspended delivery of all supplies of the flu vaccine because of "an unexpected test result".

Crucell supplies 10 per cent of the UK market for flu vaccine. A spokesman for the company said that supplies had been halted “voluntarily” because of patient safety concerns following an unexpected test result on one batch.

Further tests are now being conducted to investigate the cause before any further batches of vaccine are released and the company is expected to make a further announcement next Monday.

Practices in the UK are already experiencing flu vaccine supply problems this year. Last week NHS Gloucestershire confirmed that 1,000 appointments have had to be cancelled across Cheltenham after six surgeries were unable to obtain vaccine supplies.
